Overcoming the Challenges of Mobile Video Conferencing

The value of video conferencing is well understood: a recent Frost & Sullivan survey of more than 200 C-level executives shows that the technology is in use in 51 percent of organizations, and is personally used by 41 percent of respondents. The primary driver is cost reduction, although video conferencing is also valued for its ability to improve productivity and collaboration across geographically dispersed teams, and for improving customer service.

Video conferencing also meets or exceeds more than 90 percent of users' expectations, which explains why almost half of them plan to expand their usage in the next 12 months. Frost & Sullivan believes that much of that expansion will come in the form of mobile video solutions, which enable usage across an organization, opening up the technology to every employee who needs it, regardless of where he is located or what type of network or device he is using.

This paper examines the move toward mobile video conferencing, discuss the limitations of traditional video conferencing technology when it comes to supporting mobile users, highlight the issues IT managers must consider as they look to deploy a new system, and present one vendor's solution to the challenges, enabling better performance and a much higher ROI.

Facebook Rolls Out Free Voice Calling

iPhone users in the U.S. now can speak to each other directly for free through Facebook's Messenger app, an extension of a recent test rollout conducted in Canada. Voice carriers have little to fear just yet, said Andreas Scherer, managing partner at Salto Partners. However, "the world largest social media platform could easily become the world largest wireless provider."

Leveraging Social Media To Boost E-Commerce Holiday Sales
Addressing the power of mobile messaging, social media and other word-of-mouth technologies, this paper provides concrete advice on how to integrate them into an e-commerce business plan. [Download PDF: 8 pgs | 665k]
Facebook Rolls Out Free Voice Calling to US iPhone Users
Facebook rolled out free voice calling in the U.S. through the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone on Wednesday -- with little fanfare or formality.
There was no grand announcement -- media outlets noticed the new development and after inquiries, Facebook said it was an extension of the VoIP in Messenger test it launched earlier this year in Canada.
The feature works within the Facebook Messenger app on the iPhone. Users can place a call to contacts from the conversation list if that person has Messenger for iOS as well -- not just the Facebook app. The call goes over data networks or WiFi, instead of the voice service the carrier provides.
A Facebook spokesperson was not immediately available to comment for this story.

A Cutting-Edge Move

It is a savvy move on Facebook's part, Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies atFordham University, told MacNewsWorld.
"By doing this, Facebook is instantly allying itself with the cutting edge of the smartphone revolution -- a revolution in which it needs to be more of an active participant, rather than just a destination to reach on the phone."
The free part of the offering is bound to be attractive to users with unlimited data plans, Bruce White, professor of computer information systems atQuinnipiac University told MacNewsWorld. "What is especially appealing to this is that instead of using your voice minutes, it uses your unlimited data access"

Sometimes You Want to Hear a Voice

The offering also fills a hole in social-media communication that, for all its popularity, is still quite noticeable: sometimes people want to talk, not just hit "Like" or make clever comments about posts.
"Let's look at a scenario," White said. "You are on Facebook and one of your close friends has just posted that they are engaged. You can post "congratulations" to them on Facebook, but you really want to talk to them. So, with a click, you call them through this new service."
Plus, he continued, it is faster than the alternative, which is reading the announcement, then pulling out the phone, finding the friend's number and so on.
For Facebook, the app has the advantage of keeping users on the site that much longer, he added.

Facebook vs. the Carriers

In short, the move appears to be initial steps for a larger wireless play by Facebook. Carriers won't likely be impacted in the short term but the long-term possibilities may cause them some sleepless nights, Andreas Scherer, managing partner at Salto Partners, told MacNewsWorld.
"If Facebook is able to deliver this capability on all major mobile platforms and allows its users at some point to call to any phone number -- landline, mobile or otherwise -- then the world largest social media platform could easily become the world largest wireless provider," he said.
"Current carriers would be marginalized by simply delivering the bandwidth to enable a user experience that is created, enhanced and owned by Facebook," according to Scherer.

The Drawbacks

That day -- if it comes at all, though -- is far off, at least based on what Facebook is currently offering. The new service has a number of limitations, starting with the fact that it is only available to iPhone users, Andy Abramson, CEO of Comunicano, told MacNewsWorld. Also, to connect, both parties need to be using the Messenger app.
"The biggest hurdle, and why this won't be a threat to mobile operators, is unlike Skype, if the person you want to reach isn't online, there's no outbound calling to a landline or mobile as there's no interaction with the information on how to reach you from inside your Facebook profile."
What this offers Facebook users is instant voice if the person is online and available, Abramson said. "This type of presence-based calling has been around for a very long time so I don't see it as breakthrough."

Should Businesses Like a Facebook Graph Search Built on Likes?
Facebook's Likes are coming into their own with the debut of its new Graph Search. Likes are the power that fuels the network and the businesses that have a presence on it. It's going to be a tricky business to use that power wisely, though, and avoid the temptation to sink to spamming or privacy invasion in the quest for profitability.

So now we know why Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg have been so busy recruiting former Google big brains: They coveted their mastery of algorithms, their sure-footedness in navigating mountains of Web-based data.
The result? Facebook Graph Search, announced Tuesday by Zuckerberg. Those who were quick to ask for invites will soon get to play with the beta version, and then all 1 billion members will get their crack at using the new feature to dig up content that's been shared within the world's top social network.
Based on Zuckerberg's presentation and demonstrations by other company executives, Facebook is putting that poached Google talent to very good use. Although Graph Search applies only to content within Facebook itself, that's still a very deep ocean of information: the aforementioned billion-plus members depositing billions of bits of data about people, places, photos, music, movies, TV shows, restaurants and retail outlets.
Since the marketing industry is always looking to leverage Facebook's latest feature, another business-friendly metaphor might be more appropriate: All that information is a Fort Knox of data for businesses and brands that have been hearing more talk about "big data" (read: business intelligence) for the past year.

What to Like About Searching Likes

The semantic search interface is intuitive: "Friends who like Coldplay who live in Seattle" can be input into a newly designed search box, and suddenly you know who to bum concert tickets from the next time Chris Martin's band comes through town. In this way, Graph Search puts a white-hot spotlight on social media's longstanding potential for businesses as the world's biggest recommendation engine powered by people you trust.
Facebook is also taking advantage of its relationship with Bing as a way to surface results that aren't found in the network -- a not-so-subtle attempt to wean members from their Google search habits. However, the truly interesting aspect of this development in regard to the social media industry is how Facebook is giving marketers and businesses -- large and small -- a way to leverage all those Likes that have been shared among members.
This development marks a resurgence in Likes as the power that fuels Facebook and the businesses that have a presence on it. It hasn't been a full year since Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg spoke at the first Facebook Marketing Conference, urging advertisers and brands to get past Likes and focus instead on people and stories; to make their pitches more organic and similar to the status updates everyone sees in their News Feeds. Yet Likes are now the glue connecting search queries, and that favorite Mexican restaurant you visit every Friday for happy hour needs to get busy once again reminding customers to click that big thumbs-up button at the top of its business Page.

What's Not To Like About Searches Based on Likes

This new, great Like power comes with great responsibility for those marketing for businesses -- namely to avoid spamming Facebook users in the quest for Graph Search connections. Whether you are Coca-Cola or Carlotta's Tamale Hut, you'll need to straddle that line that separates non-intrusive from obnoxious behavior -- incentives, discounts and game-related activities always help.
The idea is to rise above the kind of activity that has proved annoying to many Facebook users, such as receiving an unending stream of "FarmVille" requests from well-meaning friends or being tagged in embarrassing, potentially job-killing photos that you'd rather not see on a billion- member global social network.
That last part leads to the privacy issue, one that's been a tug-of-war for Facebook since it was established in 2004. Zuckerberg tried to allay those fears during Tuesday's presentation, emphasizing that nothing is being searched that hasn't already been shared. Still, much depends on what advertisers do with that shared data, some of which may have been forgotten by those who did the sharing in the first place.
Members do have a responsibility to go back and use some new privacy features instituted by Facebook to clean up their profile information. As Graph Search rolls out to all members, though, some tweaks and adjustments may be needed regarding privacy protection.
Rest assured that all the major privacy advocate groups will be charting Graph Search's use by marketers and businesses, ready to vote their own "dislike" if they hate what they see.

Amazon's Same-Day Delivery Will Shake Up Retail

By Theodore F. di Stefano
Amazon's Same-Day Delivery Will Shake Up Retail
The hard fact is that we are now pretty far down the road to an online economy. More and more people realize that Amazon's prices are hard to beat. When they can couple Amazon's prices with same-day delivery, would you be willing to pay a little more for that same-day delivery and stay in the comfort of your home and, with just a few clicks, order merchandise to be delivered that very day?

Webcast: Join Compuware Technology Strategist, Andreas Grabner January 31, 1pm EST to learn how top eCommerce businesses prepared themselves for the holiday season, how they made sure peak holiday traffic wouldn’t take their site down and what top performance landmines are and how to avoid them. [Register Today]
I recently went to a local Staples store to purchase a cartridge for my HP laser printer. The cost was about US$80, including sales tax. While I was driving home, it suddenly dawned on me that I should have ordered the cartridge from Amazon at a much lower price.
As soon as I arrived home, I searched the Amazon site for suitable alternatives to the costly cartridge that I had just purchased. Sure enough, I was able to buy two laser printer cartridges for a total of $16. In order to take advantage of Amazon's free shipping, I increased my order a tad by buying two boxes of copy paper. Total cost, about $25. Needless to say, I returned my costly Staples purchase the next day.
The point is, if Amazon is currently so competitive, what will happen to the retail marketplace when it becomes even more competitive when same-day delivery becomes ubiquitous?

Same-Day Delivery and Its Ramifications

The current Amazon model, as I see it, is to build warehouses -- distribution centers -- in as many states as practicable in order to have their merchandise as close as possible to the end user, the buyer. This change in direction for Amazon puts additional pressure on the big-box stores and other retailers. Just think how easy it was for me to return my printer cartridge to Staples and order it from Amazon.
I realize that some people still want to see and feel a product before they buy it. Yet, online retail sales have skyrocketed to such an extent because more and more people are becoming comfortable with ordering certain merchandise from the comfort of their homes with a virtual click or two.
So many of the products that Staples, Walmart and other retailers sell are so-called fungible goods, interchangeable products. With that in mind, it seems that a large portion of the merchandise that these retail behemoths sell can be purchased online. My guess is that we'll see more and more of the large retailers increasing their online exposure and not stressing their bricks and mortar presence as much.

Large Retailers at a Disadvantage

What's a large retailer to do? They are already highly invested in real estate, including warehouses that supply their stores. If they are to successfully compete with Amazon, they would likely have to open additional warehouses in order to efficiently supply their online customers. Even if they didn't have to build additional warehouses, they will still be at a disadvantage to Amazon because Amazon needs no actual retail presence. They're doing just fine with their virtual presence -- their online presence.
We've probably seen images of Amazon employees plying around large warehouses on tricycles. They travel miles each day, picking out various products and tossing them into their large baskets so that they can fill orders. The products are brought by them to the shipping department, which then concerns itself with the addressing, packaging and shipping.
But, not anymore! In March of 2012, Amazon announced that it was purchasing Kiva Systems, a specialized maker of robots that services warehouses. The purchase price was $775 million in cash.
One can just imagine how Amazon's future warehouses will look. Robots going from bin to bin picking out and picking up merchandise and carrying that merchandise to the shipping department. This should ultimately bring down Amazon's cost of shipping in a noticeable way. Just think, robots don't receive any fringe benefits, they receive no vacation pay, Amazon doesn't have to pay workers' compensation on them. We can go on and on with this analysis. Suffice it to say, not only should Amazon's shipping costs be noticeably reduced by these robots, but perhaps the speed of shipping will go up, assuming that the robots can move along faster than someone on a tricycle.

Computerized Robots

I have no doubt that the robots in the future Amazon warehouses will be totally plugged into Amazon's formidable computer infrastructure. This will create instant tracking of an order throughout the factory, assuming that Amazon doesn't already have that capacity with its present workforce.
Perhaps the Amazon robots' job description will go beyond what Dave Clark, Amazon's vice president of global customer fulfillment described when he said: "Amazon has long used automation in its fulfillment centers, and Kiva's technology is another way to improve productivity by bringing the products directly to employees to pick, pack and stow." Clark also said that "Kiva shares our passion for invention."
My guess is that the robots will be doing much more than bringing the products directly to employees to pick, pack and stow. I don't see why they couldn't do much more, giving the state of robotics in the United States today.

What's a Retailer to Do?

I wish I had the answer to that question. I'm certainly not predicting the imminent demise of the large retailers. They have no doubt been thinking about what I am presently pondering.
It's like having a genie in a bottle, rubbing the bottle and saying, today I want ...

Social Issues of Pakistan

In growing years, incidences of suicide issue to rest assured wider in Pakistan and suicide has turn into a major public health problem. From available evidence it appears that most suicides occur in puerile people (contrasting men and married female) beneath the age of 30 second childhood. Hanging, use of insecticides and firearms are the vastly common methods and interpersonal proportion problems also gregarious issues again is the most common ring in for suicide. Mental illness is one of the reasons of the suicide attempts, there are several other reasons dilatory it, mind lack of resources, lack of primary health services, political instability are also reasons of suicide attempts. To tackle this problem public also health professionals ardor to power altogether cloak oversight besides non government institutions.

Suicide and attempted suicide are understudied subjects in Pakistan, an Islamic country where they are considered criminal offenses. at rest suicide statistics are not compiled nor are suicide mortality statistics reported to the totality Health job (WHO). There is absence of information on suicide from Pakistan, an Islamic kingdom in which data collection poses formidable challenges. A variety of social, legal, and religious factors establish reporting and diagnosing suicide ambitious. Paradoxically, incidents of suicide are regularly reported in newspapers Pakistan. In the effortlessness of other item these reports puff a useful, though basic enlightenment source as suicidal deaths

Pakistan is a South Asian developing country with a population of approximately 162 million, with 97% Muslim folk. Suicide is a condemned act in Islam. Traditionally, suicide numbers were low but in recent years, they have shown an increase and suicide has become a major public health no picnic clout Pakistan. There are no certified statistics on suicide from Pakistan. Suicide deaths are not included in the national annual Mortality statistics. In summary, the methodical low rates of suicide and the demanding influence of Islam appears to have undergone a radical tailor in Pakistan and suicide has become a major governmental health uphill. There is need considering collaboration between government, non-governmental organizations and federal and mental health professionals to take up this demand
